100% Syrah from the Hyde Vineyard in Carneros.
In 2010, we picked in the pre-dawn hours under lights at an average of 24.5˚ Brix to control temperature and freshness. Fruit was hand sorted and fermented in stainless steel after receiving a seven-day cold soak. Regular punch downs were performed until the desired texture was achieved. The wine was aged for eighteen months in 31% new and 69% two- to three-year-old French oak (a mixture of puncheons and barrels) before bottling in July, 2012. The barrel coopers included Ermitage, François Frères and Sirugue.
The 2010 Syrah has aromas of sweet blackberry, fresh thyme, sage, cigar box, spicy black pepper and subtle hints of violet. A bold offering with bright fruit flavors of dark plum, chocolate and baking spices. Lush tannins lend to the brilliant texture and long, lingering mouth feel in this structured, yet elegant wine.
The 2010 growing season experienced earlier bud break than 2009, but flowering and veraison occurred up to two weeks later. A prolonged frost season lasted until the end of May followed by mild early summer temperatures. Veraison was 50% complete by mid-August and warming trends in late August and late September helped to propel ripening. Overall fruit quality was exceptional. Structure, color and fruit expression in the wines are truly balanced and some of the best over the last decade.
