A Pair of 97 Point Reviews from Antonio Galloni
We are pleased to share new Napa Valley wine reviews from Vinous Media’s Antonio Galloni, including 97 points for 2013 Insignia and 2013 Backus Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon:
2013 Joseph Phelps Insignia, Napa Valley
97 points - The 2013 Insignia is just as magnificent as it has always been. Refined and polished to the core, but with all of the power of the vintage, the 2013 simply has it all. Crème de cassis, lavender, plum and exotic spices infuse this deeply expressive edition of the Phelps flagship wine. The 2013 is remarkably silky for such a big wine.
2013 Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon, Backus Vineyard, Oakville, Napa Valley
97 points - The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Backus Vineyard is a total turn-on. Deep, plush and exotic, the 2013 is also remarkably polished for a wine of its considerable size. There is a real sense of depth and gravitas that runs through the 2013. I would prefer to cellar the 2013 for at least a few years to allow the intense, dark fruit to be at its most expressive.
2014 Joseph Phelps Insignia, Napa Valley
(94-97) points - The 2014 Insignia is shaping up to be one of the surprises of the vintage. A rich, explosive Insignia, the 2014 exudes pedigree. A host of dark red cherry, plum and pomegranate notes make a strong first impression. Bright, vibrant aromatics add lift, while beams of salinity contribute to the wine's energetic personality. 2014 Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley
91 points - Once again, Phelps has done a terrific job with their straight Cabernet Sauvignon. Surprisingly delicate and gracious on the palate, the 2014 is quite feminine in this vintage. Dark red cherry, plum, mocha, licorice and dark spices build as the wine gains depth and fleshiness with time in the glass. The Cabernet remains one of the very finest values in Napa Valley.
Congratulations to our talented winemaking and vineyard teams!
