Joe Phelps had a love of food and wine that took root in the late 1960s during a pivotal trip to Italy. He became friends with, and learned a great deal from, the godmother of California cuisine, Alice Waters, with whom he shared a passion for the local provisions and fresh produce that the Bay Area had to offer. By the late 1970s, and continuing for the rest of his life, Joe was known for his legendary gatherings of family and friends in his home, where he would share great wine and food that he had prepared.
