2019 Sonoma Coast: Balancing Richness & Detail
Antonio Galloni’s Vinous – 2019 Vintage Sonoma Coast
This is another strong set of wines from Joseph Phelps. Winemaker Justin Ennis crafts Pinots and Chardonnays that balance richness and detail.
2019 Joseph Phelps Chardonnay, Freestone Vineyards
91 points, The 2019 Chardonnay Freestone Vineyards is creamy and open-knit, which makes it a good choice for drinking now and over the next handful of years. Lemon confit, marzipan, chamomile, dried flowers, mint and tangerine oil fill out the layers nicely. This is an especially inviting, young Sonoma Coast Chardonnay, with all the elements beautifully balanced.
2019 Joseph Phelps Chardonnay, Pastorale Vineyard
93 points, The 2019 Chardonnay Pastorale Vineyard offers a bit more energy and cut than the Sonoma Coast bottling, but in 2019 the two Chardonnays are not as different as they often are. Tangerine oil, dried herbs, lemon confit and almond develop with a bit of coaxing. This is an especially phenolic, savory style.
2019 Joseph Phelps Pinot Noir, Freestone Vineyards
93 points, The 2019 Pinot Noir Freestone Vineyards is a gorgeous introduction to these wines. Aromatic, nuanced and wonderfully expressive, the 2019 hits all the right notes. Sweet rose petal, dried herbs, red cherry, pomegranate and cedar are some of the many notes that open in the glass. All the elements are so nicely balanced.
2019 Joseph Phelps Pinot Noir, Pastorale Vineyard
94 points, The 2019 Pinot Noir Freestone Vineyards Pastorale Vineyard is bright and punchy in the glass. Sweet red cherry, blood orange, mint, spice and sweet pipe tobacco give the 2019 its bold, up-front personality. The 2019 beautifully balances fruit and structure. Drink it over the next decade or so.
2019 Joseph Phelps Pinot Noir, Quarter Moon Vineyard
95 points, Crushed rocks, rose petal, mint, sweet red berries and pine lend aromatic brilliance to this finely sculpted, nuanced Pinot from Joseph Phelps. The 2019 Pinot Noir Freestone Vineyards Quarter Moon Vineyard is all tension and energy. Give it a few years to soften. It’s a gorgeous wine in the making.
