2000 Cabernet Sauvignon, Backus Vineyard
Winemaker Notes The roller-coaster temperature fluctuations of the 2000 growing season extended harvest into November for many vintners, resulting in both physical and mental fatigue for vineyard and production crews. Grapes on the western-facing, steeply-sloped Backus parcel achieved optimal ripeness within a relatively brief period of time, producing a wine with luscious, ripe fruit flavors, concentrated aromas of black fruit, cinnamon and spice, and supple tannins with hints of cassis, spice and coffee on the palate. We believe the wine from this "grand cru" vineyard will easily rank among the top Cabernets of the vintage.
Winemaking Data Grapes were harvested at an average of 25.2° Brix, fermented in stainless steel tanks, then aged 27 months in new French oak barrels before being bottled in January 2003.
92 Points - Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate
The 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon Backus Vineyard boasts a saturated purple color, copious quantities of cassis fruit, atypically powerful and concentrated flavors for the vintage, plenty of tannin, and surprising layers as well as depth. (Aug. 2002)
93 Points - Wine Enthusiast
Attention to detail shows in the intensity of the currant and cassis flavors, the elaborately crafted tannins, and the vibrant edge of acidity. It's a good representative of 2000 Napa Cabernets as you'll find. (February 2004)
#2 of Cabernet Sauvignons - Steve Pitcher, The Wine News, California's Best of 2003
Warm, inviting nose of intense blackberry-cassis fruit and brown spice enhanced by subtle minerality. On the palate, there's a great burst of concentrated, black raspberry-cassis fruit that's incredibly deep and rich, accented by a rose petal-like floral component that lingers several minutes. A superbly concentrated, deftly balanced Cabernet from one of Napa Valley's first growth vineyards. (Dec./Jan. 2003-2004)
96 Points - Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar
Saturated bright ruby. Super ripe aromas of roasted currant, black raspberry, dark chocolate, violet and musky coffee. Sweet on entry, then a bit clenched in the middle. Showing a slight edge of acidity. It finishes with big, cheek-coating tannins. (May/June 2003)
