2018 Pinot Noir, Pastorale Vineyard
Winemaker Notes A nuanced and expressive offering, the 2018 Pinot Noir from Pastorale Vineyard boasts aromatic red and black fruit, heady rose and black pepper scents with a fruit core laser focused on black raspberry and cherry notes. Firm acid and powerful structure balance a lingering spicy finish notable in wines from the western Sonoma Coast.
Winemaking Data Highlighting favorite blocks within our Pastorale Vineyard, the 2018 vintage showcases Calera and Clone 777 from three separate blocks. Clusters were hand-sorted to separate the best for a 35% whole cluster fermentation which resulted in a focused textural complexity in the finished wine.
Vintage Notes The 2018 Sonoma Coast growing season was marked by cool, mild weather. The cooler than normal spring delayed budbreak, bloom and veraison by two weeks compared to the previous five years. The mild weather patterns in August and September allowed for excellent overall phenological ripening and development of a complex aroma and flavor profile in the finished wines.
96 Points - James Suckling
This is a rich pinot noir with crushed berry, spice, pie crust and chocolate. Contrastive palate with a full body, then firm and fine tannins. It’s long and structured. Give this time to open, but already exciting. -JS (May 2021)
95 Points - Robert Parker Wine Advocate
Medium ruby in color, the 2018 Pinot Noir Pastorale Vineyard opens slowly to alluring scents of blood orange, licorice, autumn leaves and intense layers of amaro spices with a core of perfectly ripe red and black fruits, continuing to offer more nuance as it sits in the glass. The light-bodied palate is incredibly silky and juicy, its tannins defined and ripe and its flavors full and layered, and it finishes very long with kaleidoscopic spicy character. What a gorgeous expression! -EB, Sept. 2020
95 Points - Wine Enthusiast
This is a subdued, sublime wine brimming in spiced black tea, cardamom and forest floor. Silky, with a touch of underlying grip, it shows its cool-climate and vintage stability, with an exuberance of fresh acidity and a lasting note of white pepper. -VB
94+ Points - Jeb Dunnuck
The 2018 Pinot Noir Pastorale Vineyard is a more firm, backward wine that will benefit from bottle age. Impressive black raspberries, forest floor, black tea, and curing spice notes emerge from the glass, and it's medium-bodied, has good concentration, ripe tannins, and a solid spine of acidity. It's another impeccably made, beautifully balanced Pinot Noir from this estate. Give bottles 2-3 years and it should keep for a solid decade or more. - July, 2020
94 Points - Antonio Galloni's Vinous
The 2018 Pinot Noir Pastorale Vineyard melds together finesse with power. Black cherry, plum, hard candy, lavender, spice and licorice nuances all build on a deep, textured Pinot. A kick of new oak adds sweetness. Although quite appealing today, the 2018 needs a bit of time to shed some of its tannin. This is an especially virile, potent Pastorale cloaked in a shroud of elegance. Bright floral notes and a kick of acid punctuates the finish. - April, 2020
9 Stellar New Pinot Noirs to Drink This Fall - Robb Report
Here’s a lush but structured estate Pinot from Joseph Phelps, offering the best of a great vintage in far-west Sonoma. A slightly brooding nose combines forest botanicals with toasted spice; dark, briary berries; and a hint of vanilla. The palate gives up rich, generous black cherry flavors and more intriguing spices against a velvety tannin structure—deceptively appealing now even in its age-worthiness. (Sept. 2021)
