2019 Proem No. 1 Pinot Noir
Winemaker Notes A pure illustration of the Quarter Moon Vineyard’s complexity and refinement is on display in the 2019 vintage. Dense black raspberry, cherry, and black currant with undertones of savory spices and rose petals abound. An angular, focused wine with the weight and structure for aging, yet delicately distinctive in its polish and balance.
Winemaking Data Block 225 from our Quarter Moon Vineyard, focused on the Calera clone (both clone 90 and 96 are the same source material as Calera), 36% whole cluster inclusion. Aged for 15 months in 53% New French oak and 47% used French oak barrels. A one hour decanting is suggested before enjoyment, or add to your cellar for 10-15 years.
Vintage Notes In 2019, bud break occurred around the same time as 2018 but was delayed compared to our historical averages due to cold, saturated soils from the wet winter, particularly in February. Cool weather continued throughout spring with an unusual amount of rainfall which delayed bloom in some areas. Canopy management was key in 2019 due to vigorous growth and moderate temperatures. July was cooler than average, but August and September warmed to push ripening ahead. In 2019, the quality of Pinot Noir from our Sonoma Coast estate was excellent with well-developed flavors, naturally fresh acidity and superb balance.
Reviews
99 Points - James Suckling
This has a perfumed nose of sour cherries, violets, orange zest, cloves, potpourri, mushrooms, green olives and hints of coconut. Wow. Packed with layers of juicy red and orange fruit with spices and herbs, framed by silky tannins and a medium body. Long and savory. Keeps going. There’s so much energy. Clone 996 (Calera) pinot noir from Jupiter Block. Hard to resist now, but better from 2024. -May 2022
